In this ultimate guide, you’ll find the complete listing of the best lactose-free ice cream brands and flavors that you can enjoy today.

    What Is Lactose?

Just in case you needed a little refresher, here’s what lactose is…

Lactose is a sugar found in most milk and dairy products. If you are lactose intolerant, you suffer from stomach pain, bloating, gas, cramping, or diarrhea whenever products containing lactose are consumed.

Can You Eat Dairy-Free Ice Cream?

    Yes.

You see, dairy-free ice cream is generally made up of frozen cream or butterfat that is derived from alternate dairy sources such as almond, coconut, soy, hemp, etc.

As a result, most people who are lactose intolerant can opt for either ice cream that is marked and marketed as lactose-free and/or dairy free.

As a matter of fact, yes. Tried Lactaid ice cream for the first time a few months ago with no problems. Sadly, not anymore. I’m getting the typical issues now within an hour of eating it.

I have all the symptoms of being lactose intolerant…but lactaid doesn’t help and lactose free ice cream still sends me running to,the restroom. Anyone else have this issue? Ideas?

I am super lactose intolerant. I do fine with Breyers lactose free ice cream. Much better than with ordinary ice cream and a fistfull of lactaid tablets. The milk used is treated with the enzyme and given enough time for the lactase to convert the lactose sugar into another sugar like glucose. The tablets in your tummy don’t have enough time to react fully and so they don’t work as well as milk pre-treated with the lactase (like lactose free milk, now commonly available thank goodness.

I don’t think Breyers is the best ice cream but it’s not half bad and it is world’s better than either no ice cream or the soy stuff. I think the vanilla is pretty good and the chocolate not very good. BUT Hersheys DARK chocolate syrup is lactose free and just excellent.

Breyers lactose free ice cream uses lactase enzyme to neutralize the lactose. therefore it is lactose free. i am very intolerant but enjoy it everyday.

Love ice cream but am lactose intolerant – I can get away with it now & then if I don’t go overboard. I was hoping for something in soy & you just answered my question. Thanks.

If any of you shop at ALDI’S…they offer a vanilla and chocolate lactose free ice cream. Its still delicious and creamy enough to scoop into cones, and from my own experience does not cause me any painful regrets. Its only $1.99 and well worth it. I can finally enjoy ice cream again. Yay!

Bryers still uses cream in the lactose free ice cream, making it not lactose intolerant. Look at the package and you will see.

Yes, it’s real dairy, hence the name ice “cream!” The lactas enzyme is added to get rid of the milk sugar (lactose) & allow for easy digestion of the dairy! I’m lactose intolerant & have no trouble at all enjoying Lactaid ice cream. If you want no dairy, then slmond milk frozen treats, cashew milk frozen treats, coconut milk frozen treats, all yummy, are the way to go!

The very first ingredient in Brewers Lactose Free is SKIM MILK. The label should say Almost Lactose Free!

The only way to make real milk lactose free is to neutralize the lactose by using Lactase enzyme in the ice cream. The enzyme “eats” the lactose eliminating it.
