McDonalds is a international company and as such each country has a slightly different set of ingredients used in their products. For example in Canada where I live the fries and hashbrowns are gluten free they are fried in a dedicated fryers in oil that is gluten-free and therefore are gluten-free and safe to eat for celiac’s which I am. In the US the ingredients and oil are different. Most but not all locations do use a beef flavoring in their oil that contains hydrolyzed wheat protein making them not safe to eat if you have an issue with wheat or gluten. As for the fries and hashbrowns you have to look up the ingredients list on their website as I am unfamiliar. I work for the company the makes blends and supplies the oil for McDonald’s so I know that the flavor additives used in Canada and the US are different.

The French fries are NOT gluten-free! They are soaked in a beef broth solution containing wheat, and is labeled as such on the box. I wish I was able to attach the photo here. It’s crazy. French fries should be potatoes, salt, and oil. Period. I miss them.

I have celiac, and have found that the only way to be assured you are not getting cross contamination, is to eat at home.
The only two flair ups happened when I ate at a restaurant ordered off of the menu marked gluten free, and got sick anyway.
What happens at the table when you order, and what goes on in the kitchen are two different things. Some servers are very aware of the problems that can occur for a person with celiac that gets into gluten, but most could care less.

      About the French Fries,

I think they are gluten free, I know lots of people who work and say that they aren’t cross-contaminated. McDonald’s considers french fries one of their most lucrative products and they’re famous for it! I don’t think they’d mess that up.

I’m also a celiac. No problems with the fries! Thank god too because I’m tired of all the restrictions, sometimes I just want a little good food!

However, McDonald’s aren’t all corporate owned, if you’ve gotten sick from the french fries, perhaps it was that one particular location that didn’t take enough care to keep everything separate.

I, personally, have had different prodcuts that have tasted better or worse at different locations (pretty much the same about ALL fast food)

      We’re humans afterall.

Well considering there is hydrolyzed wheat listed as an ingredient in the French fries themselves, i’d have to call celiac b.s. Maybe a “sensitivity” but everyone has that these days…

Mcdonald’s lists all ingredients right on their website, so that info is not hard to find. They even state on their site they do not have a “gluten free menu”. Best bet? Salad.

Great discussion and a wealth of information. Gluten laden foods has had a negative affect on our health for more than 50 years. We have to be proactive and make better food choices because our society is addicted to modern wheat. Dr. Oz did a program a couple of years ago entitled “Are you addicted to wheat?”. It’s worth watching. Thanks!

I have been told a several McDonald’s that they have a separate fryer for the fries and hash browns. Even if the fries are GF, the hash browns are not, so the fries will be contaminated. I ate them once after hearing they were GF and asking if they fried the fries in a separate fryer. Was told yes, but didn’t know they also did the hash browns in it too. I had a slight reaction.

        “Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin is gluten free. It can be made from a variety of starches, including corn, potato, rice or wheat. However the source does not matter because maltodextrin is such a highly processed ingredient that the protein is removed, rendering it gluten free. If wheat is used to make maltodextrin, “wheat” will be appear on the label. Even in this case, the maltodextrin would be gluten free.”

From what I hear, the Celiac Disease Association has declared them safe??? I don’t know if it’s worth the risk though. Honestly, if you just buy good quality frozen french fries from the store, marked Gluten Free, and deep fry them yourself in a deep fat fryer at home, they’re just as tasty. Much safer and SO much cheaper, and probably healthier because you can read the ingredients list before you buy them, and choose what you want.

I’ve worked at McDonald’s and the fries are cooked in a separate fryer from the chicken and fish (you would be able to taste it if they were cooked together!!) but the flavoring they use to make the fries is questionable because it is derived from wheat but tests as gluten free.

Hash browns get me 100% of the time.

French Fries never have made me sick at all. Ever. Never. I’ve enjoy a small fry about every two months or less. And a few times a year I even get the small cheeseburger and put the fries on it. Yep that one will get me sick. Now that I know it is the gluten making me feel not so good, I will ditch the bun when I get that desire next time.

Poison from the grocery store is poison.
Healthy salads from McDonald’s are still healthy.
Snack drinks from McDonald’s are no more poisonous than some of the treats I can put together from a grocery store in my kitchen.

Balance in life is much more joyous. I eat three things and very rarely from McDonald’s. Almost everything my husband likes there will make him sick. We figure fillers and grease in his case. But not everything is bad.

Because I hear only american mcdonalds use wheat and like 22 other chemicals on their fries.
So if you don’t live hear that may be it.

Katelyn Rauhut – I’m going to say that hasbrowns have gluten… So the fact that you aren’t getting sick from eating the fries with celiacs disease is odd… Hashbrowns are battered… You stated yourself the hasbrowns and fries are cooked in the same fryer so, chances are you have a gluten intolerance not celiacs… FYI.

Actually there are over 300 symptoms of Celiac. If you are well informed you would know that you could have many symptoms or none. My husband has Celiac (both blood tested and upper/lower GI biopsy) and can literally go off his diet for about two entire weeks….and I mean pizza, burgers, cookies…you name it…and then after about two weeks he’ll finally start feeling shaky and panicky. THAT is his main symptom. Other people can’t get a crumb in their system without all havoc breaking loose! Soooo…..anyway…..McD’s fries have a wheat coating…BUT it is less than 20 ppm of gluten….so it is considered GF. It depends on how sensitive you are I guess….

Are you kidding? You’re basing it only on price? You know MOST vegetables and even many herbs are priced under $1. Cucumber, lettuce, cabbage, cilantro…
Plus lots of UNHEALTHY food is priced over $1…pizza, pastas…

        How about no.

Obviously, you’ve never worked in food. Cross-contamination is a HUGE deal at any restaurant. Fast food prices otherwise. As someone who has a worked for McDonald’s, I know they take health precautions very seriously. It’s also the consumer’s responsibility to inform the crew or manager of allergies so they can take extra precautions. Everything on this list is certified gluten free. That means they take extra measures to not contaminate these items with gluten. Their fries are not cooked in the same oil as meat or fish products. And, as far as the food being “literally garbage”, No one forces you to eat there. No one. I don’t even eat McDonald’s. But I don’t spend my time bitching on blogs about how “garbage” it is. News flash…EVERYWHERE you go uses the same.processed products. They all come from the same place. The same of 3 slaughter houses that exist in the US. Do some research. All your food come a from one place.

Literally says this right on McDonald’s website:

“The oil our suppliers use to partially fry our fries has a small amount of flavoring that uses hydrolyzed wheat as one of its starting ingredients.”

        so NOT gluten free.

      • Dana

        May 15, 2016 at 8:26 pm

The fries may not contain wheat, but McDonalds own website states there is hydrolized wheat IN the oil it is cooked in. Also, even if fryers are designated for only fries and hash browns, some hash browns are not safe for Celiac’s to consume. Plus cross contamination, hello!? Anyone here ever order a burger without something on it and there’s remnants of that ingredient still slopped somewhere on your burger…yeah I’ve been glutened at EVERY fast food place I’ve been to. Not worth he risk! The 16 yr old behind the counter or fryer doesn’t give a sh*t if u get poisoned

Perhaps at the McDonald’s you worked at they are but at our it would happen on occasion that the nuggets, mcchicken, Crispy chicken and fish would be cooked in the same oil or fries would be cooked in the other oil.

Fries are gluten free. You ignorant fool. No they are not cooked in the same vats as chicken, I work at McDonald’s and the oil vats for Fry’s are in the front thrle McDonald’s, and are only use for fries and hash browns. Any vats that cook chicken are back in the kitchen. Fries are never made in the kitchen.

Just because you worked there, you still clearly don’t know a thing. It states right on their website, in the listed underneath the ingredients for the fries, which contain beef flavoring…

        “CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK

*Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients.”

        So, who’s an ignorant fool?

Anything crispy unless made with coconut flour or a flour alternative and fried in separate oil is most definitely not gluten free. Even grilled more than likely is not, based on the fact that they’re all seasoned which more than likely is also not GF, and they’re not fresh.

McDonald’s french fries can only be gluten free if they have a dedicated fryer to them…otherwise they are cross contaminated. One of the pictures shown for gluten free salads showed mexican strips of chips…..most likey those have gluten in them. Many stores say they have gf food but don’t truly educate on what that all means. It’s not only about cross contamination but also about certain spices, artificial flavors, wheat, barley, malt & rye which all mean “gluten”. I hope these truly ARE safe options & excited when restaurants prove to know what they’re doing, but often times, that isn’t the case & those of us who are celiac & gluten intolerent both sucfer! Just something to consider! Thank you McDonalds for making the effort in trying to offer alternatives πŸ™‚

      • Lindsay

        November 15, 2016 at 4:25 pm

They said the salad is gluten free without the chips and the fries do have a dedicated fryer. At least in Canada the fries are 100% gluten free and no cross contamination with them

20ppm might be alright for someone with Gluten Sensitivity but! For those of us with full blown Coeliac Disease we have zero choice in the matter. As it is an Auto-Immune Disease it has some serious adverse effects on our whole body.

        January 17, 2017 at 2:14 pm

Thanks Cheryl… ppl haven’t the slightest clue what’s gluten-free & not. So many things ppl would never guess (for God’s sake, even Twizzlers have gluten!)

It’s annoying when ppl think gluten-free is some diet fad. It’s not “healthier” & it doesn’t help you lose weight… it does NOTHING for the average person. In fact, some GF alternatives have higher carbs, salt & other things.

Going gluten-free is for people who are actually hurt by eating gluten… for ppl like us, eating gluten has horrendous side effects.

According to the ingredients list, the fries are made with wheat flour. As are the hash brown patties. They also add wheat flour to the oil. Which makes absolutely no sense to me. I have celiac. So they scare me.
