Gluten Free Makeup, Cosmetics, and Beauty Products

Have you ever wondered which makeup products are gluten free?

Ever spent a good 15 minutes reading the ingredient’s in makeup products and then trying to decipher their chemical names to determine whether or not they actually contain gluten?

If so, you are not alone.

Many members of the gluten free and Celiac communities are in the same boat.

Thankfully, there is an easier way that’ll save you tons of time and allow you to purchase your makeup and cosmetics with ease and confidence.

I went ahead and put together a list of all the major cosmetic and makeup companies that offer gluten free products.

And don’t worry, if a company has cross-contamination issues in their factories or aren’t 110% confident that their products meet the federal gluten free regulation of 20 ppm (parts per million), I’ll be sure to clearly state that.

But before we get to the listing, let’s talk about one important thing first…

Can Gluten Be Absorbed Through Skin?

Now according to the Mayo Clinic, gluten can’t be absorbed through the skin. Since the gluten proteins are very large, it’s virtually impossible for it to be absorbed.

The main issue arises when it’s accidentally swallowed or ingested. That’s why it’s so important to use gluten free products are your mouth such as lipstick and lip balm.

But this can also be extended to all cosmetic products as well.

So it’s fine to use products that contain gluten then, right?

Well, no. Unless you’re a risk taker.

Just think about it…

Ever washed your face with makeup on the water that just touched your skin and makeup go into your mouth? Ingestion.

Ever used lipstick and licked your lips? Ingestion.

These are just a couple of the many ways these products can be ingested.

Testing for Gluten…Who Does It?

Testing for gluten is the only trustworthy way to determine whether or not a product is gluten free or not because it’s the only way to keep the consumer, YOU, safe.

Even if a product or company claims to use ingredients free from gluten or other allergenic proteins, there’s still a chance that the product is cross contaminated with gluten during manufacturing.

That’s why I recommend using products that are tested for gluten, especially if you’re severely allergic or sensitive to gluten.

Although you can’t always guarantee 100% that the product is gluten free, there’s still a higher level of confidence instilled into the buyer that allows them to use it with ease.

On the gluten free makeup list below, I also noted which companies test for gluten.

Okay with that being said, let’s jump straight into the gluten free cosmetics and makeup listing.

Here are all the makeup and cosmetic brands that offer gluten free products, or better, are 100% gluten free. Enjoy!

Gluten Free Beauty Boxes and Monthly Subscriptions

Did you know that you can get personalized gluten free beauty products based on your beauty preferences (such as skin, hair, eyes, etc.) delivered to your door every month?

It’s true!

Here are 10 of the best monthly gluten free beauty box subscriptions that you must subscribe to this month!

Tips For Buying Gluten Free Beauty Products

As mentioned above, everything that you put on you skin has the potential to enter your bloodstream, due to accidental ingestion.

From mascara to eye liners to chapstick and hair dye, these products can lead to allergic reactions if you aren’t buying gluten free variations.

With the number of cosmetics and beauty products that we use every day, even the tiniest amount of gluten can cause major problems.

That’s why it’s so important to be extra cautious with anything that you ingest or put on your precious skin.

Here are a few ways to help you buy the best and safest gluten free beauty and cosmetic products without any risks of glutening yourself.

1. Watch out for hidden wheat ingredient names

Some cosmetic ingredients are sometimes listed using uncommon terms. It’s not often that you’ll find wheat, barley, rye, oat, etc, listed on the back of any cosmetic products. This is mainly because most companies tend to use scientific names, most of which aren’t commonly known by the average joe.

So scientific words for gluten found in cosmetics include:

  • Triticum Vulgare (wheat)
  • Hordeum Vulgare (barley)
  • Avena Sativa (oatmeal)
  • Vitamin E (not scientific but Vitamin E is sometimes derived from a wheat germ)

For a more in-depth look at similar scientific terms for hidden gluten in beauty products, see the next section after #2.

2. Read the Labels and Ingredients List

If you’re not doing this, you’re taking the biggest risk possible. But I’m 99% confident of you are already doing this. So this is for the one percenters out there.

When looking for a gluten free makeup or beauty product, always be on the lookout for a GF seal or symbol on the packaging. Or better, try to find “gluten free” or something similar. That way, you can be sure that it’s safe to use.

But also, before you buy, be sure to check the ingredients and try to find any glutenous ingredients including their scientific names.

Hidden Gluten Terms in Cosmetics and Beauty Products

Gluten can be anywhere and sometimes, it’s even listed using scientific terms that know one even knew were words.

And the scary part is that there are hundreds of ingredients that could contain barley, rye, oats, and wheat.

But do you know how to find where that gluten is buried?

Thankfully, I found this pretty awesome graphic and list by Gluten Free Makeup Gal that you should definitely check out. Also check out here blog for awesome gluten free makeup and cosmetic products reviews.

Glutenous Makeup Ingredients

Some of Nature’s Gate shampoos and conditioners are GF and soy free. My hair and scalp has liked their daily herbal cleanse and the biotin formula. I also like their lotion.

I’m hooked on 100PercentPure’s balms, shampoo, neck cream, Argan oil, eye cream, and spf protection. They have a handful of products with wheat in them, the lash lengthening mascaras, the hair serum and vegetable mask. I can’t say I’ve cared much for their make up or primer.

Acure has many gluten free products, but I had reactions to them because of glycerin, soy, etc. Maybe an option for others.

Zuzu Luxe is also Gabrielle Cosmetics.

Red apple lipstick mascara is worth it’s price!!!

Ultra Pure is another for cosmetics and I’d choose Everyday Minerals for anything foundation or eyes, over them any day.

Still struggling with finding body wash/bar soap. Frustrating! But social networking, following on Facebook, etc. helps with leads.

Hey y’all! After years of dealing with really bad gluten issues and having a really hard time finding products that are truly gluten free and dealing with health issues due to gluten overload, I took my geology background and developed a line of face and body care products that are 100% GRAIN FREE–no grains of any kind. My company is Kudarat skincare (www.kudaratskincare.com). Please come by and check us out!

This is a great list; thank you so much for taking the time to put it together! I am a nurse, and also non-Celiac gluten sensitive. I always had terrible problems with my eye makeup irritating me until I switched to all gluten free. Despite what the medical community believes, obviously some people are sensitive to gluten topically. All of my personal care products now are gluten free. Some folks may do fine with it, while others like myself may experience problems. I’ve never had another symptom as soon as I made the switch! I use Too Faced shadows and liners, Maybelline mascara, and a lot of Desert Essence shampoos, conditioners, deodorant, lotions, etc. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for this useful post. I’m gluten intorlerant. It has been so difficult for me to know whether or not some makeup products that I use are gluten free. Things with wheat or any other kind of gluten breaks my skin out. Again thank you so much.

Not everyone with a gluten intolerance/sensitivity is affected by cosmetics containing gluten. But as soon as you really care about it and start looking into it, it can be overwhelming.

Thank you for this list and thank you so much for including us! Gluten-free products are an important part of our brand and ideology. I’m so happy to represent one of the industry pioneers.

I had been using the It Cosmetics CC cream (love it) but it has hydrolyzed wheat protein as an ingredient.

I use Jane Iredale. Only the mascara contains gluten (there are gluten free ones though). I am SUPER sensitive to gluten in skincare. Like, I break out in hives. So you can all rest assured that if I don’t react to it, you probably went either.

It is very pricey. Completely worth the extra dough though. It is by far the best makeup I’ve ever used.

I know that the Mayo clinic claims that gluten cannot be absorbed by the skin but there is something wrong with that statement. My daughter is gluten free (she has Hashmotos) and she applied an eye cream which IMMEDIATELY made her thyroid swell.

Cora, my wee 4yr old gal also absorbs. She’s a celiac. She’s been allergy tested and they say she doesn’t react to skin contact with gluten. However, if that wee gal uses finger paints (any art supply) or a makeup that contains gluten she gets massive welts on her hands and spikes a fever. She also end up having a full blown gluten reaction. I think they’re wrong too.

I agree. Since taking gluten out of my diet, now I have severe allergic skin reactions. From lotions, hair care products or touching wheat products by accident.

Gluten CAN be absorbed, just not with everyone. My safety rule is ‘anything that goes on the skin, goes into the skin;.
