This is a very comprehensive list. However, if a person is really concerned about health, and not just finding products that are gluten free, then one needs to avoid tapioca and potato starches. These ingredients are even higher on the glycemic index than wheat flour. The main reason I gave up wheat is to keep the inflammation down in my body. Eating foods containing tapioca or potato starch will raise your blood sugar and increase inflammation. It would be great if a company would come out with a bread that didn’t contain those ingredients. If anyone knows of one, I’d love to know.

I agree. I don’t eat any of the breads mentioned above because of all the additives they put in it (I try to avoid cornstarch).. Xanthan gum, for instance, bothers a lot of people, and it seems to be found in most of the non-gluten foods on the market. Unfortunately. π

I found a new gluten-free brand called B-Free at Smith and Ralphs, it’s delicious! They sell white, multi grain breads, bagels, flat bread and rolls.

I like B Free also, and my local grocer just started carrying it, (OK, after I requested weekly for almost a year), what I like is they slice the bread the opposite direction, so a sandwich is more like non GF bread. Taste is also as good as Canyon.

For not too sensitive…there is a small bakery in Tampa, FL called Sami’s….their Millet Flax is the best bread I’ve ever had. It is like the sandwich bread I remember. They also sell wheat based products so there is oppotunity for cross contamination. I live in Michigan and during the cold months here I stock up as I have had issues w products arriving moldy during shipping in summer months. These are fresh baked goods which I freeze at home. My go to bread for many years. Also hotdog and hamburger buns as well as bagels. Delish!

I agree that Udi’s is bad. It falls apart on contact, too frequently has very large air holes in the slices, and is expensive. I haven’t made any bread. I do really like Schar’s deli style rye. It is good toasted. I also like that the slices are large, so that I eat one slice, halved, for a sandwich for fewer calories. Tastes good. Good texture & never falls apart. Even has fiber! Very pricey, but, so far, the best I have found w/o driving 25 miles to get it. It’s worth it for me. I love cinnamon raisin bread in winter, but have found only Rudi’s, and it need way more cinnamon and raisins to be good. Udi’s’s bagels have no taste.

I recently tasted a gluten free bread brand I like at a restaurant. I asked the waiter to tell me the brand name. It’s by a company called Rich. It seems to be only sold in lots of 8 loaves on Amazon. It is a softer, lense dense bread than most I’ve tasted. You don’t have it listed.

I just want to add if you put udis bread or even buns in the microwave helps the taste out tremendously. Fifteen to twenty seconds for the bread thirty seconds for the buns.

I found a local bakery that bakes long fermentation sourdough. The jury is out on whether this is good for super sensitive Celiacs like myself. But the research is really promising — apparently the longer the fermentation the less Gluten. I have eaten the most delicious sandwich I’ve had in year and I did not get sick. However, the Mayo Clinic is not keen on this since testing is so far inadequate. I have not overdone because of the fear factor. But I will try again in a few weeks.

The most delicious GF bread I ever had was Ozery’s Bakery Morning Rounds date & chia. Toasted with butter was awesome. The problem is that I can’t find it anymore.
Trader Joes bread is really dry. I usually get the Whole foods white sandwich bread. Overall their isn’t much selection, even in Los Sngeles.

Love the list of many breads I’ve never seen or tried, I would find a recommended list of best breads more helpful. Maybe conduct a poll for readers favorites and post the results. .

Canyon Bakehouse Seven Grain (soft! so nice!)
Rudi’s Multigrain (best toasted, but, boy is it good then. Also my favorite for making french toast)
Schar’s Artisan multigrain (soft! love it for picnics or bringing in a little box to a restaurant. The kitchen sends me out the sandwich ‘insides’ and I build my own at the table.)
Three Bakers’ Seven Ancient Grains (the bread is smaller scale than typical sandwich bread, but very very good, especially after lightly toasting.)
Our church uses Schar’s baguettes for communion bread; everyone shares from one loaf. No cross-contamination from having one table GF and one not.
I have to concur with others here, just in the effort to help newbies, that Udi’s is the worst Gf bread out there. I’m assuming they’re a big company with lots of clout and that’s why they’re everywhere? At least, here in the northeast, it seems like if I’m in a restaurant with gf bread/rolls, it’s always Udi’s that they have. Sometimes I just operate like the old days and get a sandwich’s ‘insides’ and eat it without the bread; sometimes just not in the mood for the fall-apart Udi’s bread. (That is, if I didn’t bring my favorite bread from home.)

How about GOODBYE GLUTEN brand. We get it in the Chicago area and the loaves of bread are found not in the freezer but on the shelf. The company prides itself in not having bread that’s frozen so that it seems more like fresh. The bread is dense like all gluten free bread but it’s pretty tasty and the slices are larger than the postage stamp size that most gluten free breads suffer from. I’ve yet to find a loaf of GOODBYE GLUTEN bread with a giant air hole in the center like I have with other gluten free breads.

I never tried their bread but their tortilla’s were the best I’ve tried by far. I found it in a Publix in Fl but I live in ATL and can’t find it anywhere. The company said they were only trying it in certain stores.

In Florida we have a company that sells Against the Grain and their products are awesome! They make French baguettes, dinner rolls, pizza crust and 3 different giant pizzas with a delicious crust! My grandsons are not GF but I have to hide my baguettes from them because they can devour a loaf in two seconds flat! If you can find it you should try it! All the products are in the freezer!

We have against the grain here in Massachusetts too. The best frozen pizza by far.meven my kids that don’t have celiac love it. Their rolls and bagels are great too. Very yummy because it is made with cheese. So I have to make sure not to eat too much. Hard though, because it’s delicious!

I cannot eat most of them as they are made with gums – xanthan, carageenan, etc., and I get a horrid reaction from them. The only one I found I don’t have a problem with is New Granis. I really enjoy their sourdough. Only place I can find it is on Amazon.

There’s a lot said about the side effects of xanthan gum — all pretty dour. For me, it’s the only drawback to buying commercial G-F breads. Guess I’ll have to find a decent recipe and crank out my own. π

Franz Gluten Free Mountain White bread is the best in my book. Most breads get toasted in my house because I’m not that into bread (pizza crust is another matter), but Franz is a major yum!

Not a fan of Gultino, I find that all their products taste exactly the same.
I really like the Schar’s brand, it is my go to bread. In fact I use all Schars products. Pasta is no fail. Canyon, isn’t bad but normally has to many holes, i tend to skip that one. Udi and Rudi’s are pretty much the same to me, they are good, but not my preferred. Ezekiel Bread, is really good toasted.
Kinnikinnick Foods is really good too. Great flavor. There ya go, there is my two cents.

Finding edible bread has been the most challenging part of having celiac. I think Canyon is okay, but my favorite so far is Three Bakers.
Something Sweet Without Wheat (in Massachusetts) has very good dinner rolls (but shipping is expensive).

However, I have tried all but one of the breads on your list and I must say although Udi’s is a well known brand they are THE WORST tasting on this list. Udi’s has been making GF bread for years , but as more competition arises their products do not fare well in comparison. Their products are so dense even a few bites sits in your belly forever. I am not desperate enough to eat any more Udi’s unless they drastically change their recipes.

I haven’t found any except the Essential Bread Baking Company bread sold at Costco. Less dense and a decent flavor. Saltgrass Steakhouse (oddly enough) will special bake a mini loaf if you call ahead and they will serve it to you with your steak while others at the table enjoy their yummy dark bread. Unfortunately the kitchen can cross-contaminate you there (just like any other restaurant) but every once in a while I risk it and have been okay.
I don’t think we can expect a bread that tastes as good as Wheat Bread in the near future — but eventually someone will come up with something good and not the weight of a house brick. I have no idea how Udi’s and Rudi’s stay in business — I guess there are desperate folks out there willing to buy that rubbish.

Love the Schar’s bread. Their baguettes satisfy my French and Italian bread cravings. You can smell the yeast on opening a package of their baguettes. Their multi-grain loaf makes a good sandwich, and it’s a 14 oz. loaf. I buy it at Walmart for $4.48, and sometimes there is a $1 off sticker on the loaf. And, it sits on the shelf without need for refrigeration or freezing.
Costco carries a restaurant sized loaf of Udis multigrain, 28 oz. The slices are larger than most GF breads, which is good for toast and sandwiches.
