Build Your Food Blog
If you truly take food blogging serious or want to pursue it as a full-time business, you should definitely use a self-hosted WordPress blog. You can learn more on my free how to start a food blog in-depth tutorial.
Web Hosting
Here are some great web hosting options that you can use depending on your traffic.
Hosting for Beginners: If you’re just starting out, I recommend using Bluehost. They have the best rates, easiest setup, and most bang for your buck.
Hosting for Intermediate Blogs: If you want higher performance than a shared hosting plan but without the costs, I recommend using the VPS through Media Temple. It’s pretty affordable and allows your food blog’s traffic to scale.
Hosting for High Traffic Food Blogs: For the ultimate in speed and performance, I recommend using a managed WordPress hosting service like WPEngine. They are pretty expensive once you get to a higher level site but I’ve never been happier with the service.
WordPress Themes
In my career as a food blogger, I’ve only used 2 premium WordPress themes. Here are the only 2 that I truly recommend.
Genesis Framework by Studiopress:Β Since speed, SEO, and mobile responsiveness are very important for your website, this framework isΒ the perfect option. UrbanTastebud.com, UrbanTastebudDisney.com and Menus.UrbanTastebud.com are all built on the Genesis Framework using the News Pro Theme. Most food bloggers tend to go with the Foodie Theme.
Best Plugins
Akismet: There’s nothing more annoying than getting spammy comments about cheap Louis Vuitton bags or Viagara. This plugin with prevent these types of comments from attacking your blog.
WordPress SEO by Yoast: The best plugin to help you maximize your site’s SEO. This plugin will ultimately help you get your content indexed by search engines, and even increase your content’s ranking.
Facebook Comments: I’m a huge fan of this plugin because it allows your readers to leave comments via their Facebook account. And since most people are already logged in to Facebook, they can leave comments quickly. An added bonus is that when leaving a comment, readers have the option to post it on Facebook, thus giving your article more exposure.
SumoMe: Increase your website traffic. Hands down one of the best plugins on the market.
